Nissan Frontier taxi
Nissan Frontier taxi
There is an enigma cruising the streets of my town; an otherwise unremarkable late first generation Nissan Frontier quad cab has been forced into taxi duty. Yes, you heard it right. If it weren’t for the photos I finally got of this thing in action, I wouldn’t believe it myself.
Even more strange, I have seen this continually for as long as I can remember. So it wasn’t the cheapest working car on a used lot, but it was actually selected for this purpose when it was either new or possibly just a few years old. I think whoever made that purchase needs to be institutionalized.
Seriously, can you think of a worse mass produced four door vehicle to possibly use for this purpose? Let’s examine what we are looking at.
Not only is the back seat absolutely tiny, but it is apparently very awkward to get into as well. Please, convince me I didn’t just make this up

I have to say, one of the best Ubers I’ve ever been in was an F-150 (which at least has plenty of room in the back seat). Driver was nice too (wanted to talk about Houston architecture), though I have no idea how you make money driving such an ill suited vehicle given their already thin margins.

I had a 2001 SEV6 and it was fine, I think only small people rode in the backseat so I never really noticed an issue. I think there is room if you don’t push the seats all the way back. That one is newer than mine, they changed the front later on. I actually really liked that truck but I moved from Hawaii and I couldn’t take everything.

Modern F150s aren’t terrible on fuel and have massive back seats (none of which the Frontier has), so I can see why it would be great for passengers at least.

Those rear doors are about 4 inches too small. And regardless of that, its cramp city back there.

Also fun activity, search CL for yellow cars and pick your taxi:
I guess the Charger is the right mix of fun and practicality...

Hmmm, I posted about this but without pictures a while back and someone said how difficult it was to get back there. Looking at the above image I just don’t see the point. I am sure they are great trucks, but really would you buy one as an urban taxi?

Think of how many passengers and luggage you could take with the bus though! And I guess the Torino and the Challenger are off the table.
